Trip Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrive in the City of Veracruz
Our local trip guide will be waiting for you upon your arrival at the Veracruz Airport. You will travel an hour north to the small easide town of Chachalacas and check in at Hotel La Pingui (Ping-goo-we). This 16 room hotel is run by a local Mexican family. Personalized service is the key as they also live there. The sign above their information desk reads, Su Casa en la Playa (Your House by the Beach). The rest of the day is free to explore the town. The hotel is located a short walk from the sandy beaches of the Gulf of México.

Day 2:
Archeological Ruins / Spanish Conquistadors / First Church built in the Americas / Soak in Thermal Pools
After breakfast, we will travel to explore the archeological ruins of Cempoala. These ruins were once the capital of the Totonac people with an estimated population of more than 25,000. Most of the structures date back to the 14th and 15th Centuries. Then we will visit the town of Antigua where Hérnan Cortez and his army of Spanish Conquistadors first landed and also learn some history about the Spanish invasion of the Americas. Still standing in the small town of Antigua is the first church ever built in the “new world.” Lunch will be at a small restaurant with a nice tropical view of a lake. Then we travel a short distance to the town of Los Baños (The Baths). It is here that we will find hot natural springs flowing up from the earth. Some local folks have built swimming pools to capture this clear hot water and we will have the opportunity to relax in these therapeutic waters. We will again overnight in Hotel La Pingui. (B,L,D)

Day 3:
Waterfall from the movie, Apocalypto / Temazcal Ceremony
This morning we check out and travel to the southern part of the state to the tropical lakeside town of Catemaco. On the way, we will stop to see the massive waterfall Mel Gibson used in his movie, Apocalypto. We will check in to a hotel near Lake Catemaco and in the evening, experience a Temazcal Ceremony (optional). This is a ancient ritual that includes an igloo-shaped hut which becomes a sauna and a special cleansing mud. It will be an experience! (B,L,D)

Boat Ride/Tropical Nature Reserve/Swim /Jungle Waterfalls Today we will explore Lake Catemaco by boat and dock at a tropical natural reserve called, Nanciyaga. A young guide there will lead us on a walking tour in this jungle setting to tell us some of the history of the ancient peoples who lived there. After this tour, the boat ride continues to see monkeys that live on the island lakes. We then head around the lake by land and up into the dormant green volcanic hills to explore some beautiful waterfalls. It is there we will have a rustic outdoor lunch prepared by the family who owns the land and the waterfalls. The opportunity is there to take a dip in the big pools below the different falls. We then head back to Catemaco and our hotel. (B,L)
