Explore Catemaco & the Los Tuxtlas Region

3 Day/2 Night Package

Travel 100 miles south of the port city of Veracruz and enter the northern-most area in the Western Hemisphere where tropical rain forest conditions exist. Green fields, green jungle forests, green dormant volcanic hills, colorful fragrant flowers, and over 550 different species of tropical birds dominate this area called the Los Tuxtlas Region.

Most of the travel books will tell you about the witches (Brujos) that populate the lakeside town of Catemaco. Truth be told, you would have to search to even find one. What you will find though, is a fair-sized typical town with an amazing backdrop containing one of the largest freshwater lakes in all of México. The mostly round Lake Catemaco stretches 7 miles (11 km) in diameter and except for the town of Catemaco, there are only a few small villages surrounding it. Also surrounding the lake are 3,000-6,000 foot (900-1800 meters) volcanic hills seen in all directions.

Take the road heading north out of town and in less than one hour, it will dead-end at the sandy beaches skirting the warm waters of the Gulf of México. This is a fantastic place to swim, relax, have a drink at one of the beachside palapa restaurants, and soak up the tropical rays of the sun.

A word used by many to describe this area found in the southern part of Veracruz is - Tranquil.
