Xalapa's Anthropological Museum & Tour of the city of Xico

One Day Mexico Adventure Vacation

Xalapa's Anthropology Museum & Tour of Xico

Less than 2 hours from the port city of Veracruz, you will find the capital city of the state of Veracruz. Xalapa (or Jalapa) is situated at a higher elevation on a series of hills with the Sierra Madre Mountains looming in the distance. This city is rich in culture with art galleries, interesting small shops, home to the University of Veracruz, and also the very modern Anthropological Museum. Just south of the city, you will have the chance to wander around the small cobbled street town of Xico.

Itinerary: You will be picked up in the morning at your accommodations in Veracruz by one of our local bilingual (English/Spanish) guides. He will take you to the capital city and to the modern Xalapa Anthropology Museum. Here you will find the largest collection of artifacts from the people who lived in the Mexican gulf coast regions. Represented are the Olmec, Totonac, and Huasteca cultures. One of the main attractions on display are the huge Olmec stone heads. Your bilingual guide will be with you to interpret what you are seeing.

Later, we will travel to visit an old stately coffee hacienda called, Zimpizahua. Next, we will explore the pre-Hispanic settlement of Xico. Colorful houses with tiled roofs and colonial doors line the cobbled-stone streets of this old town. It is there that we will also visit the Dress Museum of St. Mary Magdalene who is Xico's paton saint. This museum displays the dresses worn by the image of the Virgin over the last 200 years. We will also have an opportunity to see the impressive Texolo waterfall.

We will have lunch in Xico at nice restaurant. Afterwards, we will travel to see the Texolo Waterfall. Your guide will then return you to your accommodations or other dropoff point in Veracruz.
