Catemaco & the Los Tuxtlas Region

One Day Mexico Adventure Vacation

Explore Catemaco & the Los Tuxtlas Region

Tropical paradise is waiting for you less than 3 hours south of the city of Veracruz. The area known as the Los Tuxtlas Region is colored in green, green, and then more green. Dormant cone-shaped volcanic hills, jungle forest, and several large lakes comprise this tropical tranquil hide-a-way. One of the three larger towns found here sits beside a huge warm water lake. The streets of the town of Catemaco incline upwards from Lake Catemaco to the town center. It is easy to find the main square - just look for the two white steeples of its main church. The circular lake is approximately 6 miles (9 km) in diameter and has 32 miles (51 km) of shoreline making this body of water one of the largest lakes in all of México.

Itinerary:
In the early morning, you will be picked up right at your accommodations or wherever you are staying in the city of Veracruz by one of our local bilingual (English/Spanish) guides. Your group will travel approximately 2½ hours south to the lakeside town of Catemaco. Your trip guide will lead you on a walking tour of this town and along the lakefront including a visit to the Church of the Virgin Carmen. You will have lunch in one of the small restaurants there. Afterwards, it's time for a fun boat ride on the lake. Look close as you may see monkeys hanging around one of the islands found in this lake. Our boat captain will drop us off at a tropical nature reserve called, Nanciyaga. A young park guide will lead your group on a short tour of this reserve. At the conclusion, you will board the boat again for more fun on the water as you travel back to the town of Catemaco. There will be some time to explore the shops found in town. Next, you will travel to see the massive waterfall called Eyipantla (E-gee-pant-la). This location was used prominently in the film, Apocalypto. You will have the opportunity to view the falls from below and also from the precipice. Be warned . . . there are 242 steps to reach the bottom of the falls and 242 steps to get back to your tour vehicle. After all the photos are taken with the thundering waterfalls in the background, your daylong journey continues to the town of Santiago Tuxtla where you can view one of the huge stone Olmec heads which were uncovered nearby. The Olmec culture is considered the oldest civilization in Mesoamerica. Finally, you will start your travels back to the city of Veracruz after a fun day of relaxed exploration.
